„I was here for their two-week multimodal pain therapy programme. This is my 5th German hospital stay, my 4th different hospital, and my first time at this particular hospital, so I have some means for comparison and perspective. I can confidently say that this was the best hospital stay I’ve had, by a significant margin. I was honestly terrified of having to stay for two whole weeks because of my awful experiences in the past. What I was met with instead was incredible compassion and kindness from every single member of staff. The doctors, therapists, nurses, cleaning staff, and the lovely lady who took our lunch orders - there was not a single person who didn’t go above and beyond to make sure my stay was comfortable and productive. I wish I could give everyone a hug and personally thank them for the difference they made in my life. Actually, the only person who was a bit of a jerk was the man at reception, which is normal in Germany. Did I leave with a cure? No. But that was never the goal. The purpose of the programme is to help people find ways to manage chronic pain as effectively as possible. They listened to me, took me seriously in ways I never have been before, and worked as a team to understand my condition rather than treating each problem in isolation. My German is terrible, and there was initially some concern that I wouldn’t be able to make full use of the programme because so many of the activities are conducted in groups. Fortunately, using AI real-time translation, I was able to participate fully. There were eight of us in the group, and I ended up making what I genuinely hope will be lifelong friends. We even have a WhatsApp group now that has effectively become a little support group. I should warn anyone considering the programme that the food is terrible. My intake nurse warned me about this, so at least I went in prepared. You’re allowed to leave the premises outside of your scheduled activities, so I recommend bringing plenty of healthy snacks. I was so constipated from all the bread and cheese and lack of vegetables, but honestly, I was willing to make that sacrifice for the quality of medical care. 😂 I also absolutely loved the lady who took our meal orders - shoutout to her. It can’t be an easy job. Even the Germans were complaining about the food. For anyone considering this programme, my biggest piece of advice is to come with an open mind. Being in pain all the time is exhausting, and it’s completely understandable to feel defensive, frustrated, or defeated. And yes, being told to meditate when you’re in severe pain can feel almost offensive. But the staff here are genuinely open to dialogue. They don’t simply tell you what you should do and expect you to blindly follow it. You can discuss what works, what doesn’t, and why. And together you can figure out what might actually be useful for you. I even asked them about trying a medication off-label (something German doctors can understandably be cautious about) because there is evidence for its use in the US and UK. To my surprise, they were very receptive. Their attitude was essentially: we’re open-minded, and if there’s something that might help, we’re willing to consider it. After some genuinely awful experiences with the German healthcare system, I came here expecting to have to fight to be heard. Instead, I felt listened to, respected, and cared for. I didn’t leave cured. I left with more tools, a better understanding of my pain, and a group of people I hope will remain in my life for a very long time. Five stars, without hesitation. If you’re a staff member who remembers me, thank you so so much x“
